The Ontario provincial gov't has introduced for a few years now a plan whereby you get a new, free, fancy thermostat. What's the catch? In the high heat of summer when air conditioners are running everywhere and peak load is near, the power company would get to control those free thermostats by programming them to 26 degrees C (79F). You have no choice, they get to override your settings. I opted not to get one. I like my house cool and I'm willing to pay for it.

I haven't been involved in smart grid development, but I think it will be a big thing. Many customer comments say they don't like the idea. Saving energy, they say, will be one more thing to worry about. I disagree with that. We'll still be free to burn energy at peak times, you'll just pay more. People with time on their hands will be able to cut their energy bills dramatically by burning energy during off hours.
